The primary role of the system engineer is the support of the Clinical Research Informatics (CRI) infrastructure, including implementation, management, support and evolution of the SDL analytics environment. This is a mid-level position that needs someone with experience and knowledge of database administration and backup (Oracle), virtualized environments (VMWare), Linux (Ubuntu, RedHat) administration, monitoring (Nagios) and application servers (Tomcat). This person will interface with internal facing IT systems, security, networks and software engineering teams, as well as external vendors and collaborators. The primary responsibility lies in systems engineering activities around the CRI infrastructure and applications monitoring. This person will work closely with and take direction from the engineering leadership for planning work and reporting progress. Most importantly this position needs someone with a team-oriented, hands-on, no-task-too-small attitude towards systems work. Our team is growing in its charge and responsibilities and along with that grows our infrastructure complexity and we need someone with a willingness and ability to  learn quickly and grow professionally with the team.


  • Responsible for infrastructure and systems tasks within the team
  • Coordination and collaboration with Engineering leads and other IT teams within the organization.
  • Design, upgrade, and maintain virtualized infrastructure, storage systems, and networking systems using VMWare technologies
  • Responsible for setting backup, replication and housekeeping of databases (primarily Oracle) using RMan, shell scripting, cron and other technologies.
  • Set up and evolve system logs and error log monitoring and implement system trend monitoring
  • Analyze performance reports and application errors to pinpoint any database, application or systems problems
  • Responsible for capacity planning and performance management of critical servers and applications.
  • Management and configuration of application servers like JBoss and Apache Tomcat
  • Transition of legacy server infrastructure to virtualized environment
  • Ongoing evaluation of infrastructure utilization and life-cycling of legacy hardware
  • Facilitate growth of CRI infrastructure and planning of maintenance windows
  • Planning and documenting disaster recovery and business continuity activities as they pertain to current team goals and initiatives
  • Implementation and planning of a variety of server, network, and storage platforms
  • Understand and manage all aspects our CRI clustered infrastructure
  • Design of monitoring systems to maintain 24 X 7 uptime and availability of the production and shadow clusters
  • Write code/scripts in administrative languages for maintenance, automation, issue resolution, and alerts.
  • Working with external vendors and collaborators to keep our CTMS and clustered data lake environment up to date and ensure that we can make our commitments.
  • Performs a variety of complicated systems tasks, and provide support for escalated trouble tickets


Minimum Required:
  • 3 years of experience managing Linux(Red Hat preferable) environments and shell scripting for configuration and automation
  • 2 years of experience with Oracle database administration and backup using RMan and other tools.
  • 2 years of experience implementing, troubleshooting and maintaining virtualized infrastructure environments using tools such as VMWare vSphere ESXi, vCenter etc.
  • 1 year of experience building monitoring and alerting infrastructure to support production systems using Nagios or other technologies
  • 1 year of experience working with application servers like Apache Tomcat and JBoss
  • 1 year of experience working with troubleshooting and maintaining server hardware
  • 1 year of experience working with server, networks and other system diagrams and documentation
  • Experience designing and setting up clustered big data environments.
  • Experience working in healthcare domain.
  • Experience working with Enterprise Class NAS and SAN technologies
  • Experience and knowledge of Active Directory
  • Experience moving legacy hardware and applications to a virtualized environment
  • Strong planning skills to predict infrastructural needs and ensure stability of current applications and infrastructure
  • Experience with DNS, DHCP, NAT, OSPF and IP Routing
  • Experience with updating and using (CICD) Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment and (CM) Configuration Management tools (Chef, Puppet, etc)
  • Experience working with hardware and software vendors to plan and optimize infrastructure
  • Experience with using automation build/deployment/source control tools (Jenkins, Ant, Maven, Git, Nexus, TeamCity)
