    The Lead Software Developer will report directly to the Director of the Epidemiology Informatics and Study Management Unit. This person will work with Principal Investigators to gather requirements, and lead the development team in creating new systems for research and lead the development team in designing and creating new systems which implement research operations management and data quality assurance processes.


    • Responsible for the architecture, design, development, implementation and technical documentation of data-centric systems that enable research staff to conduct research both individually and collaboratively across Institutions.
    • Serve as Technical Project Lead and business analyst for a team of developers in informatics based applications using a wide variety of Microsoft technologies
    • Work directly with Principal Investigators (PI), research and technical staff to gather requirements and translate them into secure, adaptable distributed systems that are typically used to acquire, transform and disseminate research data.
    • Responsible for ensuring that all developed products meet state, federal and sponsor requirements for data security including the guarding of PHI data.
    • Work with national third party organizations to assist in the inclusion of data into national databases.  Act as the single point of contact for principals at these organizations to establish data integration requirements, assess the  data for quality assurance purposes and conduct the design and implementation of a robust and secure system for the timely transfer of data to these outside organizations.
    • Investigate new technologies and provide guidance to other members of an informatics team in the use of new technologies.  These activities include best practices for leveraging available technologies and design and development approaches that enhance systems robustness, security and maintainability.
    • Provide clear documentation of systems.  This includes both internal code-related documentation and external user documentation
    • Provide analytic services for transforming raw data obtained from a wide variety of sources into high quality data sets that can be analyzed and interpreted with appropriated confidence levels.
    • Responsible for managing multiple projects simultaneously.


    Required Skills & Competencies

    • Bachelor’s Degree  in computer science, mathematics or other hard sciences.  A Master's Degree is Preferred
    • 7-10 years of increasingly complex software development experience is required;
    • Demonstrated experience in the development of informatics based systems utilizing Microsoft technologies including .net, SQL Server and Sharepoint.
    • Excellent communications skills including superior writing skills, and oral and visual presentation skills
    • Ability to evaluate business needs, interact with customers
    • Speaks clearly and expresses self well in one-on-one conversations and groups;
    • Develops effective written communications and uses them appropriately;
    • Interacts and proactively shares information with internal and external contacts where appropriate

    Desired Technical and Professional Skills

    • Strong architectural and development experience for the creation of enterprise-based solutions in RDBMS
    • Strong architectural and development experience in web-based technologies such as .net , JavaScript, CSS, Visual Studio, HTML
    • Strong experience in the efficient use of reporting tools such as SQL-Server Reporting Services
    • Strong experience in the use of Extract, Translation, Load tools such as SQL-Server Integration Services
    • Strong architectural and development experience in both procedural and object languages such as VB, C, C++, C#,
