The Manager of Sustainability and Energy Management will play a vital role in developing, implementing, and managing sustainability initiatives across the Einstein College of Medicine campus as well as managing energy. This position will be responsible for implementing sustainability programs, management of energy acquisition utility management, that align with the organization's environmental goals and commitments while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Sustainability Program Management (25%)
• Implement and manage sustainability initiatives across the college
• Support the coordination of green teams and sustainability committees
• Engage with departments to identify and implement sustainability opportunities
• Track and report sustainability metrics and progress toward goals
• Support the development of the annual sustainability report
• Contribute to the organization's climate action and decarbonization planning
• Assist with sustainability education and awareness programs
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting (25%)
Energy Management & Acquisition(25%)
• Manage all aspects of energy acquisition including electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and water resources
• Develop and implement energy hedging strategies to optimize costs and reduce financial risk
• Monitor energy market trends and provide strategic reconunendations for long-term energy contracts
• Coordinate with utility providers and maintain relationships with key energy partners
• Create and maintain systems for tracking energy consumption, costs, and related metrics
• Analyze utility bills for accuracy and identify opportunities for cost recovery and savings
• Manage interruptible gas service program, including compliance with curtailment requirements
• Coordinate with building operators for fuel oil procurement and delivery management
Budgeting & Financial Management (15%)
• Support development of annual utility budgets and forecasts
• Track actual expenses against budgets and prepare variance analyses
• Manage energy accruals and coordinate with finance team on utility accounting
• Identify and apply for energy incentives, rebates, and grants
• Prepare financial analyses for energy efficiency projects and sustainability initiatives
• Manage GRT remission process and other utility tax recovery programs
• Coordinate tenant utility billing for leased spaces
Project & Vendor Management (10%)
• Oversee energy efficiency and sustainability projects
• Coordinate with facilities teams on implementation of energy conservation measures
• Manage relationships with vendors, consultants, and service providers
• Support the application process for utility incentives for capital projects
• Coordinate with engineering team on building systems optimization
• Support commissioning and retro-commissioning activities
• Develop project justifications, track progress, and report outcomes
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Environmental Science,
Sustainability, or related field
• 5+ years of experience in energy management, utility operations, or sustainability
• Demonstrated experience with utility procurement and energy market analysis
• Strong knowledge of energy systems, utility billing, and energy data analysis
• Proficiency in data analysis and financial modeling using Excel and other tools
• Experience with regulatory compliance related to energy and sustainability
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in related field
• Experience in healthcare or higher education settings
• Knowledge of NYC energy regulations and compliance requirements
• Experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and energy accounting systems
• Familiarity with greenhouse gas accounting and carbon management
• Experience with energy hedging strategies and utility procurement contracts
• Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED AP, or similar professional certification
• Knowledge of building automation systems and energy monitoring tools
• Experience with project management methodologies
